Small ui thing to improve filters usability

If you select another quick filter from the list they will be combined.

Really, how? Whenever I do this, the selected quick filter replaces the previous one.

Sorry - I misread what I was doing! You're right - the new filter replaces the previous one.
In order to merge quick filters currently you'll need to go into the More Filters window.

Just to add to what WhiteRider said since it may not be obvious - in More Filters you should click Edit QuickFilters, pick the other Filter you want to add in and click Load Filters and then you can choose to load those filters and merge them in to your currently selected filters.
