Help Please with perfomance help tuning.

Postby paul rizzo » Wed Sep 23, 2009 10:55 pm

Hi I just reading the Performance Tuning PostgreSQL thread and removed my postegresql 8.3 to get 8.3x. (let me note i don't know much about computers and just want my pt3 to run better so exuse me if some of my questions sound stupid)

my problem is that when i went to download it I cant find it on their site. Maybe I could get a direct link to the download for postgresql 8.3.x

I would suggest getting the PGInstaller version of the latest 8.3, which is currently 8.3.8.

Thanks for getting back to me. But before i read it I found a download for 8.4 from a link from postgreSQL website to a site www.enterprisedb.com and I downloaded it their. Should I erase the one I just got and install through the link you just gave me?

Also, after the downloaded i realized that postgres gave me a user account in that name. Is that because I didn't disable the user account control?

8.4 is fine, and the enterprise DB installer is OK too, but once you've installed that way you need to continue installing that way in future.

The 'postgres' user will always be created - this is needed.

Do you have the postgres service running?
Start > Programs > Postgres > Start Service.
Do you see any postgres.exe processes in Task Manager > Processes?

Yeah, the postgres service is running. I went to task manager under processes and I found six postgres.exe processes. Also I stopped service and started again and six came back.

Also, let me say I know nothing about computers. I don't know if i have it set up correctly at all. When i downloaded 8.4 i selected the win32 like directed but im not sure that i selected the zip folder. I don't remember extracting the file, selecting a language or anything.

Is it bad to uninstall/reinstall more than absolutely necessary, because at this point I would feel better just dumping this 8.4 and installing it again (and following the instructions better)

Thanks again for you time.

Did you fully uninstall postgres before re-installing, and install with the defaults?
As long as there is only one postgres service running PT3 should connect to it.

Do you have any existing databases that you need to keep?
