Error installing postgres on new computer/Win7

Postby okayplayer » Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:55 pm

Hi, I read the earlier post about the issues with Win7, but mine seems different. I tried 8.4.1 from the link you put in the first post, and then that gave me this error: "Problem running post-install step. Installation may not complete correctly. Error reading file: C:/Program Files (x86)/PostgreSQL/8.4/data/postgresql.conf"

I tried running PT3 anyway, but it didn't work and I did the UAC thing too. I uninstalled (though there seemed to be a problem with that), and then tried again with 8.3.8.1, and got the same thing.

Also, one weird thing, when I restarted after the UAC thing, it showed "postgres" as another user account at the log in screen...

Please help!

The postgres user will need to be a standard Windows user; you can ignore them being at the login screen safely.

Is there a postgresql.conf file in the location referred to by the error?

No, it is empty. BTW, there is an 8.4 and an 8.3 under postgres (under the subfolder Program Files (x86)) now, does that mean the uninstall did not remove all of the 8.4?

When I tried to uninstall postgres, it gives me an error saying something like, can not stop service, error uninstalling, and goes forward with uninstall after I click OK, and then at the end it says something like Uninstall was not successful. But it appears the program was removed from the list. What is going on?

That's very odd. Do you have any actual data in either of these phantom databases that you would want to save?

In that case, uninstall PostgreSQL as best you can and then delete the C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\ directory entirely, then try installing again.

I have done that with every version (4 now I think) of postgres that I've tried to install! See the above posts. With each new install I get the same problem.

The easiest solution at this point is likely going to be scheduling a remote assistance session so that we can troubleshoot this with you directly.

Hi Guys,

I found out that postgres leaves files on a PC even if you deleteevery thing. I coulnd´t delete these files under VISTA and moved them to a "trash area". Then I could reinstall postgres properly. Hope that helps.
