Remote database; overhead / performance?

Postby teppei » Mon Jan 04, 2010 4:08 pm

Hello,

I'm thinking of using my dedicated server to host my postgresql database for PT3. I'm wondering if the performance loss due to the overhead caused by network latency is noticable at all?

I lost my previous database due to a hard drive crash, so my current one is really small (~5k hands). But it'll grow again eventually; how would a remote database affect performance when I get to ~300k hands?

Thanks

Having the database on a remote server, assuming it's on a local network, will actually work quite a bit better than having it on your current machine. And a 300k hand database is quite small for these sorts of things; you shouldn't have any trouble there at all.

The remote db wouldn't be on the local network; it would be on my dedicated server located in NYC (I'm in Québec City).

I should have mentionned that, sorry

What sorts of throughput speeds do you generally get between client and server?

I get download speeds of ~800 k/s, and ~30-40 ms when pinging

You shouldn't have any problems then.

Thank you. I will setup the server this week and let you know how it worked out.
