Port number 5432 alrady in use

I am following the stepwise guide to manual uninstall-reinstall postgresql. i had to download v8.3.10 because i did not find 8.3.9.. Then i kept following the instructions until i reached the initialize database cluster page and the default port number is 5432(i also change the other settings that they said.ie server and client setting ,entering of password).on clicking next it says "the port number is already in use. plz specify a different port".Now what do i do???i m stuck at page 20 of that guide.

i tried 5433 and it got working.
