No, just make sure you don't tell postgres to use more than ~4GB of RAM because it won't be able to. Also, don't forget that postgres relies on the operating system to cache it's file efficiently so it's more important that Windows has access to large amounts of RAM.

That isn't to say you wouldn't see some performance improvement from upgrading to a 64bit postgres, but it's not required to get the most out of 8GB of RAM.

Ugg lol silly me for not being more specific.

I don't really care which version I use, other than I'd prefer to use the most efficient yet stable version. So what's the official/unofficial recommendation for 64 bit? (And the answer to that ought to be in one of your tutorials as a large number of users will be running 64 bit machines at this point. In fact, if the recommendation is to jump to 9x in this case, you ought to have a 64bit download/upgrade version bundle on the download PT3 software page?

More info.

I was looking at my log file for other reasons, and noticed that even though I installed 64bit 9x, it only seems to be recognizing 4G of memory when i have 8gb.

Is this the expected behavior? see the bolded line i broke out below as it reviews the specs...

That may be the way the available memory is read - we seem to see logs showing 2GB for systems which have 4 on XP (for instance). I'll see if I can find out for you.

32bit programs under 64bit Windows only have access to 4GB of memory.
