Updating PostgreSQL and password

Postby pccarballo » Tue Mar 22, 2011 7:45 pm

Hi
I have postgreSQL 8.2 and when making a backup on PT3 it says Its better to update postgreSQL.

In the postgreSQL web there is this message: Update releases 9.0.3, 8.4.7, 8.3.14 and 8.2.20 are now available for download. All users are recommended to upgrade as soon as possible

Which one do I pick? Do I need to make a backup of the database before updating postgreSQL?

Also I installed postgreSQL a long ago and I don´t remember my password and my username. Where do I get them?

Thanks!

Also..I want to format my PC and restore PokerTracker like i have it now.. What should I do?
What's the difference between making a backup or exporting all the hands and reimporting them?
With the backup which things will not be saved? HUD? custom statistics or reports?

Thanks!

The latest 8.4 version is probably the best choice, although 8.3 is supported by PT3 as well and we have quite a few people using 9.0 as well without any report of problems (me included).

You need to make a backup of your database(s) before updating – different major versions are not compatible without doing a backup/restore.

Your PostgreSQL username is almost certainly "postgres", and you could try "dbpass" for the password, but otherwise you can remove the need for PostgreSQL passwords: How To: Remove PostgreSQL Password (although that tutorial is for 8.3 and it may be slightly different in 8.2).
If you're going to uninstall 8.2 then you may not need it – when you install the new version that will be set up again.

PT3's built-in Backup/Restore mechanism will store all of the files that you need after you re-format.
Tutorial: Backup and Restore
I would suggest that you keep copies of all of your original hand history files as well, that will allow you to recreate your database should it ever be necessary.
When you make a backup now (using 8.2) does it say that your database has been backed up, or does it say that you need to update PostgreSQL before using the backup mechanism? I think that the backup should work – in which case, that file is all that you need. Before you uninstall (or format) anything I would suggest you try restoring a database from that backup, though, just to make sure.

When trying to download postgres from here
http://www.postgresql.org/ftp/binary/
I don´t see any 8.4 version for win32, neither 9.x.x
Also in the guide of unisntalling and reinstalling postgreSQL it says that we should install 8.3.9
I don´t see that version there..

Thanks!

8.3.9 was the newest version when that document was written. 8.3.14 is the newest 8.3.x version and will work fine. But you can find 8.4.7 (the latest version of 8.4) here.

Shouldn´t I go to the pgInstaller instead of the One click installer?

I´ve done the net user postgres /delete
And the installation program still ask´s me for the password, which I don´t remember. I´ve tried with all the ones ive found in the forum (dbpass, postregress...) and no one works..

Once you delete the postgres user, you should be able to put in any password you wish and then the installer will create the user with the password you specify.

There is no pgInstaller for 8.4 as it's not being maintained past 8.3. We recommend using the pgInstaller for 8.3 as it provides some additional flexibility but the one click for 8.4 or 9.0 will work just fine.
