Pokertracker Database Hosting - Searching for Betatesters

Postby Eishoernchen » Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:41 am

Hello Everyone,

I'm a passionate pokerplayer and use Pokertracker for longer than 2 years now. I'd like to offer an net-service to host PostgresSQL-databases online so that people, which are using Pokertracker are able to play on different machines with the same database.
For example: you play at home with your desktop pc and you want to use your notebook to play and track your poker play as well. This is where an online database comes into play.
You don't need to install PostgresSQL anymore on one of the PCs. You create an online-account at my hosting-service and connect the pc and the notebook to our database. We make backups for you (if you want to) and keep the database runnning. We monitor the online-status of your database and keep track of updates and security patches. No more worrying about the database.
I am using this solution on my own server for over 2 years now in every day play and I never had a problem with the latency or responding time.
Because a lot of people complain about the performance of such a solution, I want to make a beta stress test with a few power pokertracker-users which are interested in testing such a service.

So basically: I need you!

I need you, to give me feedback and gain some more experience in: "what hardware should be needed to fullfill the desired high performance of a (semi-)professional pokerplayer."
Are you interested in helping me? I am planing a beta test for at least two weeks. Of course the service is absolutely free of charge for you.

Best regards
Philipp

Seems to me it is a little bit out of line ... basically personal hand histories are the most valuable thing for most of the poker players and storing such thing "openly" on your server without providing any encryption seems to me not a good idea. Anybody who has potentially access to your server would be able to steal data .. you can be as incorrupt as possible but there are always third parties :( And you can definitely imagine what you can do with very large hand histories - I would say that selling it is much more profitable than providing server database space.

Hem 2 will be providing similar service so I would be definitely looking at their implementation.
Few observations:
1) it must be sufficiently encrypted
2) when it is encrypted it can't be provided for real time usage - I think it would be to slow ... even if the encryption/decryption is done on client side
3) so there is acceptable only sync mode where you can sync two or more databases by the help of your server
4) so you have to create some sync client which will do encryption and syncing with your server

I have been thinking about it few days ago when I had read release notes for HEM 2 .. but I am not sure if it is feasible without support and contract with PT team ... I would definitely like to be part of this (as a developer) but I think, if PT team is thinking in the terms of money such regularly paid syncing services is definitely +EV and if I were them I would like to implement it as fast as possible (at least in the future release/service pack of PT4) !!!

Well, these are the things i make my mind about, too. Just not to get you wrong: the server is as secure as any other server on the net you are renting. So when you rent a server and supply a website on it (even this forum we are writing in) is not sufficently encrypted. That is one of the things that you can't change when you host your data on rentable servers.
But of course you are right. The service depends on the trust of the customer.
But did you really thought about encryption, when you uploaded your last text file for example with the dropbox service?

You are right from 1-4 if you want to make it safe, so that nobody can steal your handhistories.

Thanks for the input!

Hallo Eishoernchen,

I'm trying to setup a dedicated server @ home to play around with it and see if I gain performance or not. Can you provide me with info? I suppose you're running dedicated linux root or VServer?

Honestly I have some issues and problems while manually importing hands (there may be others ahead, but this is my nemesis atm).

I hope we can get in touch and then talk the more beautiful language ;-)
I would be very interested to dig into the topic of dedicated database servers with you.

Cheers
