Problem installing PostgreSQL 8.4

Postby mrdcool » Sun Nov 27, 2011 6:26 pm

After being away from online poker since April, I'm looking to get back into it. I d/l the latest beta version of PT, but Postgre 8.3 didn't seem to work. After reading another thread I decided to try to delete and reinstall, this time with 8.4. I go through the installation process fine, but get an error message toward the end "Problem running post-install step. Installation may not complete correctly. The database cluster initialisation failed."

Help?

What operating system are you using? What errors were you getting with PostgreSQL 8.3?

I couldn't load PT without some error message that I frankly can't recall. I read a topic on the forum about removing and then re-installing to fix the problem. I guess a few posts here led to me think "upgrading" to 8.4 was a good idea. I could simply try to reinstall 8.3 and see if that works. I'm using Win 7.

Upgrading PostgreSQL versions is a particularly complicated upgrade that tends to be more trouble than it's worth. Have you tried following our detailed uninstall/reinstall FAQ on our documentation page?

Yes. Followed it exactly, up until the point of getting the install error when trying 8.4.

Did you try installing 8.3? If you have existing databases from 8.3 you'll need that version anyway.

When trying to install 8.3 again, I get the following error: "The existing data directory (date/time setting: floating-point numbers) is not compatible with this server (Date/time setting: 64-bit integers).

That error means you're using the wrong installer - if you were using the one click installer, you need to use the pgInstaller (and if you were using the pgInstaller, you need to use the one click installer). Using the other installer will work properly.

You lost me. I have no idea what a pgInstaller is, nor what the "other installer" would be.

OK i figured out what that meant, but I've tried it each way now and nothing is working. The pginstaller it looks like it starts to work, but then nothing ends up happening. The one-click install is the one where I get the error message. I consider myself at least reasonably computer literate, but I cannot get this to work at all.
