Cannot connect to DB

Postby Angryman » Tue Dec 20, 2011 3:16 pm

Since the last update I have had error messages about not being able to connect to the DB. My HUD kept working and its only now when I try to back up my DB that it wont accept any password. I cannot get Postgres to start now on my pc as it returns a login error (1069). I adjusted the pg_hba.conf file to trust but I still cant log in. I have submitted tickets to support about it but I dont get any answer from them.

Could somebody please walk me through how I go about resetting postgress user/pass so I can get it running on my pc?

If the pg_hba.conf file is set to trust then the password shouldn't matter at all. If you click Start type Event Viewer and click on it and look in the Applications section for Postgres related errors, do you find any? If so, could you paste the full error text here for me?

Click Start, type Services and click on it when it appears. In the list find PostgreSQL. Click on it and click Stop Service, then click Start service (if the services isn't running just click Start Service). Does the service start successfully?

The easiest thing to do will be to follow our uninstall/reinstall guides for your version of PostgreSQL - the guide deletes and recreates the postgres Windows user which will fix this password problem.

Ok, Im using postgress 9, I cant see the guide for that version. Will my DB still be intact if I unibstall/reinstall?

Yes so long as you do not manually delete your data folder your database will be intact. You will still want to follow the step in the guide that involves deleting the postgres windows user at the command line (search either pdf for the command net user postgres /delete and you'll find the details there).

Please create a support ticket using this link and provide a link to this thread in the subject line and we'll set up a remote session to get this corrected for you. That will probably be easiest for all of us at this point.
