PostgreSQL Will Not Run

Postby pianospike » Tue Feb 26, 2013 3:11 am

Got the dreaded error "cannot connect to database."

This is what I've done so far in response:

Turned computer on/off.
Tried starting SQL 8.3 directly in services.msc--timed out and would not work.
Upgraded to SQL 9.0 (32 bit) with no different results.
Uninstall 9.0 and reinstall with no different results.

I have Pokertracker 4 and Windows Vista.

Please help.

Ok, first in order to keep your data - reinstall 8.3. Once 8.3 is reinstalled, click Start, type Event Viewer and open it when it appears. Expand the Windows Logs area in the left hand side and click on Application. Look for errors relating to PostgreSQL in the list in the top center - you should see some. Click on the most recent one (after attempting to start and having it fail) and tell me what the error text says.

I only see one error listed.

It says "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout."

In that case, attach the 5 most recent files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\8.3\data\pg_log folder to a support ticket and we'll take a look for you at what could be going wrong here.

I did as instructed yesterday. What happens now? Do I await a response by email or something else? Thanks.

You'll get a response by email and you can also see the response on your My Tickets page.

Thanks, guys. Got it working again. Solution below for my own (if this issue occurs again) and other people's reference:

Please see the links moderator kraada includes here: https://www.pokertracker.com/forums/vie ... 20#p154429

There's some sort of issue in your Windows internal networking which those links will address - it appears to be what's causing the PostgreSQL trouble therefore once it's done (and if successful) I'd reboot and see if PostgreSQL will then function properly.

Since the trouble isn't actually PostgreSQL itself but Windows, this is most likely why installing other PostgreSQL versions didn't fix anything.
