If you've turned it into a folder, then that's all you need to do.
You can now proceed with the installation.

i'm doing something wrong, i started again and i created a folder for the postgre and the option extract was there, i clicked it a loading bar popped up then nothing happened, now the extract option is gone so i am assuming it is extracted to wherever it is but where that is or what to do i don't know.

thanks

It should have extracted to the same place, or a subfolder.

I am a windows vista user and postresSQL 8.3 didn't work on my system. I proceeded to download postgreSQL 8.2.7 and went through the installation process. In the service configuration windown i try to create an account password but it will not let me unless I change the account name. Upon changing the account name a password is valid. The account is created at this point with the new account name. In the proceeding Initialize database cluster window, I choose a different password without changing the superuser name. In the installation process where it is "creating user account" an error occurs saying " User 'taylor' could not be created: Access Denied!" At this point the installation ends 'prematurely because of an error'. This same error pops up when I tried again changing the superuser name to match the new account name.

I am at my wits end with this postgre stuff and have run out of options, I have been trying on and off for months to get this to work but keep giving up.
ANY help at all is much appreciated!

I can’t get this to work I need help
I have started again and downloaded pt3
I have downloaded the postgre 8.2.7 after getting the initdb error on the prev postgre
From here on I have no clue what to do. I have tried different ways not really knowing what I am doing.
I download postgre 8.2.7 and then it opens in real player and real says it needs additional download which doesn’t work, what do I do to get this to work? I have no clue what zipping or extracting are or how I have blundered into those steps.

thanks

To unzip the file, move it into a new folder on it's own somewhere, right click the file and choose Extract.
You can then run the .msi file as instructed.

i have made it into a folder on its own but there is no extract option when i right click on it.

When I click on download 8.2.7
It says what should firefox do with this file, the options are:
Justzipit archive (default) this opens in real player says I need a new download
Firefox this opens a blank web page
Or other not able to use anything else.

which should i be using?

thanks

So you have a file called something like "postgresql-8.2.7.zip" in a folder on it's own?
For what it's worth, you should probably actually download and install Postgres 8.3.3, but that's by the by at the moment..

Right click the .zip file (not the folder it's in) and you should have some sort of Extract option. I don't have Vista, so I don't know exactly what it will say.

Is the file a .zip file?
When you double click it, does it open like another folder to show you more postgres files?

If so, create another folder somewhere else (not inside this one) and drag the files from the .zip folder to the new folder. You should be able to run the installer from there.

If it's not a zip file, then you have probably downloaded the wrong thing. Follow the link to 8.3.3 that I gave above and try again.
