Netbooks and PT3

Postby Oojamaflip » Mon Oct 13, 2008 7:09 am

I recently bought PT3 and think it is a great product, and use it on my desktop machine.

I am though in the market for a laptop or a netbook (Asus EEE, Acer Aspire 1 etc etc). I wonder if anyone has tried running PT3 on those kind of smaller netbook devices (or online Poker software generally), and whether I should avoid Netbooks and go for a heftier featured laptop?

I don't know anything about those smaller netbooks, but I would imagine that their harddisks are possibly smaller and/or slower, and since tracking applications are necessarily database-intensive they use the disk a lot so this may mean it doesn't run too well. You would also need to check how fast the processors are and how much RAM they have?

I run a HP Mini 110, 1.6ghz Atom...

To run PT3 I had to upgrade to 2gb of ram, as well I installed a 80GB SSD.

Once the processor gets caught up with the heavy opening/closing of PT3 it actually runs pretty well... Not as good as my desktop, but I wouldn't expect it to be!

Just don't try to start the HUD!

If you're going to be using the machine to play you really want a little more power than most netbooks are going to offer. Even if you get a laptop, I would strongly recommend going SSD - normal laptop hard drives are much slower and you'll see a considerable all around boost that will be very nice for PokerTracker performance. Other than that, RAM and CPU boosts are good - I wouldn't buy a machine these days that wasn't 64 bit with at least 4G of RAM personally . . .
