int in custom stats

You cannot use the lookup_from_id function in the columns. It's not valid SQL, so it can only be used in the variables and the stat expressions.

yes, the problem with that is that I either need lookup_from_id in the columns section (because substring only works there) or substring in the stats section (because lookup_from_id just works there). Mutual exclusion I guess

I've mentioned this to the development team, and hopefully we will get substring available in the Stats tab at some point.
