PostgreSQL v8.3.5

Postby Thomas42 » Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:38 am

I currently use PostgreSQL v8.3.3, however v8.3.5 have been available since November the 3rd. Also, PostgreSQL is only used for PokerTracker (PT3, PT2, PTS & PTO) for me.

Looking through the release notes for both v8.3.4 & v8.3.5 there are a lot of things that have been fixed and many of them are listed as performance improvements. Of course I have no idea how this affects the PTx products or if anything in these two newer versions breaks compatibility.

I find very little information on this site about if any of the products are tested with the latest version. I think it would be very good if you could have a page, in the product section for example, that list the PostgreSQL versions that all products are tested and verified to work with.

A page that list each product and then the version numbers for PostgreSQL they work with. Then of course information about how to update it to work with PTx would be good as well.

PT3 should work with all version of PostgreSQL newer than 8.2.

I believe we currently bundle 8.3.5 with the download (in the with PostgreSQL releases), and I've been using 8.3.5 personally for months with no problems.

Since the PostgreSQL team does not break backwards compatibility (or tries not to anyway) with new 8.3.x releases, you should be able to upgrade within that tree anytime they put forward a new release without a problem.

Sorry to say, but "should work" is not good enough for a critical part of your products. There is very little information or guidance about the versions of PostgreSQL that is tested and has been validated to fully work with all of them.

I don't think its too much to ask for an info page with an overview over which version you officially have verified that works with each of PT3, PT2, PTS and PTO.

I mean, I don't mind using your beta versions and giving feedback on those, but as you know there have been times before when we where advised to not update to the latest PostgreSQL (happened for PT2) so I want to at least avoid that by simply checking that overview page to see which one I can update to.

8.3.5, the newest version of PostgreSQL, is confirmed to work with PT3. I use it, myself, every day.

The most recent versions of the 8.2.x branch and 8.3.x branch of PostgreSQL work with PT3 (that's 8.2.11). PostgreSQL is not maintained by us but we do make sure that the most recent versions are compatible. There is no reason for anybody to be running, for example, 8.2.3, as that version is significantly older, and is missing critical security and other bug fixes. The 8.2.x and 8.3.x branches are not compatible with one another (that's how PostgreSQL does their versioning), but both work with PT3, and both have been tested, repeatedly. If PostgreSQL releases a new version that breaks something in PT3 -- which I do not expect to happen, but there is always a possibility, especially since we do not develop that software -- we will fix whatever necessary and issue an alert as soon as we are aware of the issue.

Pat is the one who supports PTv2, if your problem is with PTv2 supporting the newest version of PostgreSQL you should talk to him in the PTv2 forum.

PAHUD supports 8.2.x and 8.3.x but you cannot use the database cache in PAHUD with any 8.3.x version of PostgreSQL.

Thanks, that's great info. Seems you guys have a very good knowledge about how different versions of PostgreSQL with your products. It would have saved us both a lot of time if all this would be on an info page, after all that page would not need to be updated very often. I read the forum almost every day to keep up with development and all the issues...
