Glad you got it working again.
And good work with the backup - everyone should make a backup of any changes they make as files can become corrupted at any point - not just in PT3, but any important files!
The files you need to backup in PT3 are:
C:\Program Files\pokertracker 3\data\layouts.pt3
C:\Program Files\PokerTracker 3\Data\StatDefinitionsCustomized.pt3
C:\Program Files\PokerTracker 3\Data\ReportsCustomized.pt3
C:\Program Files\PokerTracker 3\Data\Config\Buddies.cfg

As well as your hand histories and/or databases.

Alright, I'm still having problems starting up PT. Before all that would come up would be the logo. Now I'm getting a screen which is asking me to configure PostgreSQL. In the screen I'm given the server, datbase user, port and a password which I don't have. Can someone tell what this means?

PT3 stores all of its data in a PostgreSQL database which you need to have PT3 connect to while PostgreSQL is running in order for PT3 to function properly.

The default values for PostgreSQL are:
Server: localhost
Port: 5432
User: postgres
Password: dbpass

If this password does not work for you, you can disable password authentication by following the directions of this tutorial.

Once again this morning when I tried to fire it up it was not a problem. Also, I ran another virus scan and there was once again a tracking cookie. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. It is quite a nuisance (sp?) when all I want to do it open it and imort my hands, but it is working again so all is well.

I backup all my hh's, custom stats, etc fairly often so I don't have a problem there luckily.

Thanks for your hard work.

That may be your virus scanner noting our authentication system, but I can't say for certain. Either way, I would not worry about any tracking cookies from PT3.

I encountered this same exact problem yesterday. I was playing on PS with PT3 (trial version, build 4) up and running and while running a report, PT3 crashed, and ever since, I'm unable to get past the oval logo on the screen. I tried ending all of the processes in the task manager, restarting; even turning off my firewall and norton to no avail.

I followed the advice of the above poster and turned my logging on and sent a log of the failed startup to tech support (ticket # 50618). Interestingly, after reading the log myself, it seems it is connecting to the Postgres without a problem and the Querys are all loading successfully but the final 2 lines indicate an error in the StatManager:

2009/02/15 12:25:33.109: [00003096][StatManager] Loading stats and reports...
2009/02/15 12:25:33.703: [00003096][StatManager (Error)] Expected chunk item of type 'string' but got type '0x00'

I don't know what this means or how to fix it, but I was curious if others problems are the same or different.

Since I'm running the trial version and have about 35 days left, I'm really hoping this is resolved quickly. I have really been considering purchasing PT3, but I have to admit, I'm apprehensive after these technical problems...What will really make my decision is how tech support handles the problem. It's expected that bugs exist in programs, but how efficiently they are fixed makes the biggest difference between fair and excellent companies.

That sounds like you have a corruption in one of your stat or report files. I'm sure someone will get back to you via your ticket soon, but you can try this..

Close down PT3.

First, try re-installing - do not uninstall first, just install over the top.
That will recreate your built-in stat and report files.
Try PT3.
If it works, you're done.

If not, close it down again and kill any PokerTracker.exe processes.

Rename the file:
C:\Program Files\PokerTracker 3\Data\StatDefinitionsCustomized.pt3
to StatDefinitionsCustomized.pt3.bad
..then try starting PT3.
If it works, then that file is corrupt. Please attach it to your ticket.

If it doesn't work, try renaming this file too.
C:\Program Files\PokerTracker 3\Data\ReportsCustomized.pt3
