PT3 on external harddisk, works shortly then freeze

Postby funk » Wed Apr 29, 2009 7:17 pm

Hi
some time ago I ,oved my PT3 postgres database successfully to an external harddrive.

it worked ok for some months, but now for already some weeks PT3 always freezes completely after some hours. large data imports are impossible. even while playing it freezes after some time.
clustering a huge databae is impossible now because it wont finish.

other applications like spadeeye can read from the postgres database though.

what can I do? (already checked UAC, re-installed postgres, deleted old databases, deactiated antivir...)

any ideas?

How big is the external hard drive and how big is the database? It sounds like you need to perform housekeeping; the cluster may take quite a while on a very large database. A user recently imported a 30M hand database and it took him 2.5 days for the housekeeping to finish. If you can let the housekeeping run for a very long time, it will likely finish eventually, but if there isn't enough free space on the hard drive in question (you need to have at least as much free space as the database uses for the cluster to finish in optimal time), it will take longer.

Also, have you ever updated the cache? If not, at least run analyze and update cache and that should improve speed significantly. If you enable logging first, you can monitor the log file and it will tell you how far along the cache is in the creation process.
