Go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.0\data folder. Is there a file called postmaster.pid there? If so, delete that file and then try to restart the service.

There is no file called postmaster.pid in c:\program files\postgresql\8.0\data or in any subdirectory of c:\program files\postgresql\8.0\.

I don't know what else to tell you then. When was the last time you backed up this database?

If have a collection of databases, of which only two are active. My oldest backup is about one week old, so if I could restore my data, I would be okay. A problem is that I cannot restore anything because I postgres finds a bad block and asks to be terminated.

Does anyone know what this
"block 574 of relation 1663/1312090/1916124"
means? What is block 574 of relation 1663/1312090/1916124?

Does relation 1663/1312090/1916124 refer to a database? Which one? How can one find out?

How can I get postgres to skip its restore process?

I'm not certain what those numbers mean, PostgreSQL isn't very intuitive in that way. Given that the service won't even start, it may be the error is with one of the PostgreSQL db system files and not with one of your PT databases.

What I would suggest is you install PostgreSQL 8.2, you can find a download file here...

http://www.postgresql.org/ftp/binary/v8.2.13/win32/

Then in PT, open the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window and add an entry for the 8.2 install there and then use the Utilities > PostgreSQL Database Functions window to try to do the restore of your database into 8.2 (you can restore an 8.0 db into 8.2 with no problems).
