Interesting workaround; it should work fine, I believe. And I agree having the icon around would be appreciated by many and it's been suggested many times (and I've suggested it to the development team more than once now), so hopefully we will see it, I just can't say when.

Another suggestion to accomplish the same...

Let us color code the notes icon.

That's been suggested several times and while I expect something of the sort to be possible eventually it may be a while as it will require a database change.
