Unable to Connect to PostgreSQL - WinXP

Postby snoopdarr » Mon May 25, 2009 11:40 pm

I recently tried to run PT3 for the first time in a few weeks. I got the error that I am unable to connect to PostgreSQL. The only significant change (I think) I have made in that time was uninstalling AVG av and installing avast! av.

I found in these forums how to uninstall/reinstall Postgre, which I followed and it completed, but did not help. I then tried uninstalling everything, and reinstalling the full PT3 (latest normal build, not beta) and I get the same error. PostgreSQL is installed, and the several processes are running.

I must admit I know little about PostgreSQL and only installed it when I upgraded from PT2 to PT3. I don't really get what's going on in the "pgAdmin III" tool. When I'm in there, I can connect to the DB server (at localhost:5432), and it shows "PT3 DB" under databases. But pgadmin never says "Yes" next to "running", even if I tell it to "Start Service". What is wrong?

Make sure that Avast! has built in exceptions to allow C:\Program Files\PokerTracker 3\PokerTracker.exe, C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\bin\pg_ctl.exe and C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\bin\postgres.exe full access; if the latter two files can't access port 5432 then PostgreSQL won't be able to start.

Yes, PT3 and PostgreSQL are listed as exceptions. Just for fun, I uninstalled avast! altogether, and it didn't fix it. What next?

Attach the last 5 files in the C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\data\pg_log folder zipped up to a support ticket and we'll go from there.
