Yes. PT3 uses multiple threads to talk to the database server; this is completely normal.

I see the same thing here. I just reboot my PC and WITHOUT starting PT3, I see 4 postgres processes in the task manager. Is this normal?

Yes, it is still normal.

When PostgreSQL starts it has 4 processes: the stats collector, the writer, the logger and WAL writer.

Once you start PT3, PT3 opens new connections to the database and each connection is a new process.

You should not worry about these extra processes because it is exactly how PostgreSQL is supposed to work.

Serious Performance Problems with Pt3: Postgre?

Postby PokerJack » Fri May 29, 2009 6:36 pm

I am just testing Pt3 but
have serios performance problems with Pt3:

Quite often the system seems to freeze and I get timed out despite having only one site with one or two tables open.
I suspect it is the fault of those 12 Postgre processes - they even take over 100k in memory all together.

I remember I had similar problems with Pt2 when I tried to use Postgre with it (maybe one year ago) -
- switched back to Access quickly and used it until now.
With Pt2, Access, PAH and Gametime+ I'm using up to 6 sites with together up to 15 tables at once and don't have those problems.

Is it possible to downsize the Postgre processes (and maybe other Pt3 processes), give them lower priority or some other measure ?
The tables must get the highest priority and must not be disturbed by Pt3 or Postgre.

My system: Windows XP, 2GB memory, Kaspersky.
In my Pt3 database are less than 5000 hands until now.

What's the speed of your hard drive and of your processor?

It really isn't possible to have fewer postgres processes. That's how PostgreSQL works.

You can try the Peformance Tuning: PostgreSQL though as that might help. Also defragging your hard drive could make things better for you.

hard drive: 5600 rpm
processors: 2 * 2Ghz

One main performance tuning measure described is to get more Postgre processes.
But thats the opposite from what I want to achieve.

By the way, I am not sure sure that it is the fault of Postgre - maybe it is the HUD ?

I want weaker or less Postgre or Pt3 processes.
I don't mind the displayed HUD information taking a little longer to get updated.
But I cannot use it when the poker site clients get disturbed.

Better performance results in less lag. It's supposed to be a good thing.

Your problem is most likely your hard drive; the hard drive is slow. Have you tried defragging as I suggested? Part of the reason that PostgreSQL can slow things down is because it reads data from the hard drive and if the files are fragmented it makes things markedly worse.
