Possible Error in your Tutorial

Hi Guys,

I decided to bite the bullet and purchase an external USB HDD.

As a result i have been closely following your Tutorial: 2 installs of pt3, 1 database, no networking!

In the "Restore Databases" Section it mentions to create your new DB via PT3.

Based on my previous experience where I ended up corrupting my DB (thanks heaps to everyone in Support for getting me out of trouble), I have a feeling the new DB should be created bia pgAdminIII as the next step requires you to execute a Restore.

I went ahead and created it via pgAdminII based on the advice I received as a result of my previous problem so I am hoping I have done the right thing.

Could you please verify this for me.

I am a little confused. The root cause of my previous problem was due to the fact I was creating thr new DB via PT3 prior to a restore (Refer to Support Ticket 56141)

This is what apparently caused my DB to report an incorrect number of hands in the various Tabs in PT3.

Not trying to be nit picky, just thought I would bring it to your attention.

i am in the process trying an alternative way to use postgre on the external USB hard drive, following the FAQ from the competitor. where you don't install postrgres onto the drive. you install it onto each main comp, but only copy the data directory to the drive and share it. once i get it working ill do a write up for an alternative method for the faq.

and to get back to the main q

if you check the FAQ for backup and restoring, it says to do it the way you did, through pgAdmin. i do it that way and its always worked

I would be very interested in your alternative method as this sounds like an even easier way to do it. Just saw your post so I will have agood read.

I wonder if I were to use the USB HDD's file replication program as a method of keeping 2 PC's synced would that work as an alternative. Most file replication software is quite smart and you could copy the data directory in a snap. Might give it a go if time permits.

As for the possible error I was talking about, I was following the "Tutorial: 2 installs of pt3, 1 database, no networking!" as oppsed to the FAQ on Backing up and Restoring DB's.

yeah, i just posted the alternative method. i'm not sure the way i mentioned is easier or not. someone might think its easier to just install postgresql fully to the harddrive as in the original tutorial, rather than have each postgre install point to the shared data folder

using the drive's software to copy the data directory back and forth would save all this hassle, i would imagine, but then you'd still need to plug the drive into each computer each time to copy the changes over. i guess it would work. if you give that way a shot, let us know about your results

Since you are looking to review this install guide I would like to provide the following feedback.

Tutorial: 2 installs of pt3, 1 database, no networking! - "Download and install postgresql 8.3.4" Section.

I found this section a little vague. Not sure if I did the right thing but I ended up following the Install Section in your "PT3 Uninstall/Reinstall of PostgreSQL" Guide at the same time making sure I executed the extra steps Prajna mentions in his section. As an example Prajna makes no mention as to whether you should or shouldn't run Stack Builder and install the ODBC drivers. I assumed you would have to and went ahead and did it anyway.

So if my approach is correct it would be worthwhile referencing the "Download and install postgresql 8.3.4" Guide int the Tutorial: 2 installs of pt3, 1 database, no networking!

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if I can assist further.
