Back up not working

Postby onthehustle » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:59 am

I've been trying to use back up since it was introduced and can not. trying to back up my large DBs - they are 45 - 50 GB each. I set it up and watch the TEMP folder grow, then it trys to write to the zip but the max zip size goes to +/- 2GB (seems small) PT3 claims success but when I click on the ZIP it says The Compressed file is invalid or corrupt. A small DB seemed to back up fine.

The problems with backing up large databases should be fixed in Beta 30.6.
Do you have plenty of disk space? (enough for a full copy of your database)
If you still have trouble in Beta 30.6 please report your problem.

Plenty of room - 1TB external. I also moved the temp file to the large drive. Versions previous to 30.6 would fail at 7GB due to some restrictions in size. In .6 it says complete but produces a corrupt 2 gb zip . Have you tried a large db on your end? I did report it.

I did a back up in pgadmin. Said it was successful but left a .backup that is 2.3gb on a 50gb DB. Does that sound right?

I've informed the developer working on the backups about this thread.

Does the size of the pgadmin backups sound right? They seem small. I want to have some type of backup so I can upgrade PG.

I would not trust the Postgres backup because of the undocumented 8G limit on TAR compressed DBs. If you did your pgadmin backup without compression then this file is much too small.

Can you view your zip file in WinRAR? (your zip file size is normal for poker dbs)

I did it with "compress" selected not tar as per the tutorial in the forum. The file extention is *.backup. The base size of my DBs are +/- 50GB.

Poker DBs normally compress really tight, but we can't vouch for the quality of pgadmin backups.

We have done a lot of testing with very large DBs, but 50G is really huge. Could you try right-clicking the bad zip and see if it opens with WinRar?

I was thinking about the term "huge" - they are only +/- 2.5 - 3 mil hands
