excessive HUD CPU usage (Beta 14)

Postby six4withafro » Wed Jul 02, 2008 4:27 pm

I installed Beta 14 because the changelog said that it would reduce cpu usage by the HUD. Unfortunately I've experienced the opposite -- my cpu usage has increased. Once it stayed above 80% usage (dual core, no less), I turned off the HUD. The program froze and I had to kill the process. So, I started logging and restarted the program. Without the HUD, cpu usage is minimal. With the HUD, cpu usage increased to above 80% in minutes.

How do you guys want me to proceed with reporting on this? What other details do you need?

And, is it possible to roll back the install? Most of the time CPU usage is above 90%, and that seems like a recipe for timing out at tables once I start playing.

My disk I/O is also constant. Is there a way to instruct PT3 to use memory rather than constantly reading from the disk?

Thanks for responding.

PS just stopped the HUD again, it shut down properly, cpu usage and disk I/O dropped to nothing. still auto importing.

so like if you are saying you have high hdd i/o as well? this could be i/o requests from the postgres postmaster into the db... it might not as well; it might be the o/s paging because of processes that are demanding cpu are short of memory; but i think it unlikely the pt process has a high memory occupancy that would cause the latter... you can tinker around with a process's cpu priority in most o/s', but i would not advise you do this.

if you are in a windows environment, try getting procexp from sysinternals to look at bit more at the cpu, i/o, memory occupancy and page faults of pt & the postgres processes...

also your pc spec and whether the postgres is running across a network or localhost...

thank you for responding. I always have process explorer running.

pc specs: 2.4GHz cpu, dual core, 2 GB RAM, 1 sata 2 160 GB HDD, running XP Pro

postgres is running thru localhost, i have almost a GB of RAM still available. and when i kill the HUD, both the CPU usage and HDD I/O cease. the hdd activity is constant, steady at 3 MB/s or so, with occasional bursts of > 25 MB/s.

oddly enough, the bulk of the excessive cpu/hdd activity does not occur thru the pg process that opens when i start the hud.

i'll try to replicate the problem on as few tables as possible, but i suspect the issue is because i have 18 tables open.

i'm playing on full tilt. here's an example:

and after my first orbit at my tables, my stats disappeared for 2 orbits! very confusing

ok, wel i can rig one of our test rigs to that spec and environment; and i'll try to replicate your problem - i'll cascade 20 tables of tilt hud...

can you get the actual procexp from sysinternals please; and post back the tablular data i asked for before - thanks...

here you go. i'm running v11.13. i assume you're referring to the performance tab that i can select in the window that pops up after i double click the process in the main window.

HUD process first, then the process from the database.

For what its worth, i'm seeing the same problem running 6 tables on stars. HUD cpu usage is through the roof.
