Cant restore backup database

I had some problems w postgres and uninstalled it and reinstalled postgres v 8.3 instead of 8.2 which is what I had before. Now when I try and restore a backup db it just opens the file further into the directory and treats it like a folder and I cant restore it because I cant choose it. Any idea why?

I'm not understanding what you mean. Are you not able to select the .backup file you want to restore from? Are you sure what are selecting is really a file and not an actual folder name?

yes, i press browse to pick the restore file, a directory named "restore database from file" opens, i click on my backup database, press open, and then the directory heading changes to "select location of 'pg_restore.exe' file", and all it has is my desktop directory (my docs, my comp, etc).

the restore file i am trying to choose isnt a folder, it has a windows icon that has about 6 little things inside the box, like a file that doesnt have a preset program to use when it is opened. i have a macbook pro and run windows xp on it and ive had problems all of a sudden with xp, perhaps it is unstable and has corrupted my files?

You need to navigate to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.3\bin folder and select the pg_restore.exe file there.

I went to folder mentioned above and there are no contents in it.

The file should be there. What folder did you install 8.3 in?? Search your hard drive for the file called pg_restore.exe to see if it's in some other folder.

i searched in the c: drive and found that file. however, it is only 128k. what should i do with this file now?

What folder was it in? When you are prompted during the restore you need to navigate to that folder and select that file. It is needed to do the restore.
